Black trumpet mushrooms have a rich, smoky flavour and a fruity aroma. They are funnel-shaped and brown, gray, or black in colour. The edges of the cap are rolled outward and wavy.

When picking them out, check for signs of mold, a slimy texture, or a bad odour.
